Sejak ribuan tahun lalu, penyakit, pembusukan, hingga fermentasi sudah diamati, tetapi penjelasannya sering dikaitkan dengan hal- hal supranatural. Pemikiran awal tentang kemungkinan adanya makhluk renik dapat ditelusuri dari tulisan filsuf Romawi Lucretius (98-55 SM) yang menyebut keberadaan \u201centitas mikroskopis\u201d penyebab penyakit. Pemikiran ini diperkuat oleh seorang dokter Italia, Girolamo Fracastoro (1478-1553), yang memperkenalkan konsep \u201cspora penyakit\u201d yang dapat berpindah melalui udara, kontak langsung, maupun benda perantara (Fracastoro, 1546\/1930).
