Teori Malthus (1798) menyebutkan bahwa pertumbuhan populasi penduduk selalu lebih cepat mengikuti deret ukur (geometrical ratio) (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, dst.) sedangkan pertumbuhan sumber daya pangan dan produksi yang tersedia untuk dikonsumsi bergerak secara perlahan mengikuti deret hitung (arithmetical ratio) (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, dst.). Berdasarkan data BPS (2022) pertumbuhan penduduk Indonesia sekitar 1,22% tahun-1 mendorong permintaan pangan terutama beras yang terus meningkat. Sementara itu, lahan pertanian khususnya lahan sawah luasnya mencapai 7.463.948 hektar dengan rata-rata produktivitas padi 52,56 ku ha-1. Indonesia mengimpor beras sejumlah 407.741,4 ton untuk mencukupi kebutuhan akan beras pada tahun 2021. Agus dan Irawan (2006) memperkirakan pada tahun 2025 Indonesia harus mengimpor 11,4 juta ton beras untuk memenuhi kebutuhan pangan penduduk Indonesia jika produktivitas padi tidak meningkat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
