Ilmu kimia tidak lagi hanya mempertimbangkan ikatan kovalen dalam suatu molekul namun juga interaksi non-kovalen antara molekul-molekul kimia. Bidang kimia supramolekul mempelajari tentang struktur tiga dimensi molekul-molekul yang terorganisir dengan baik melalui interaksi non-kovalen (Huang dan Anslyn, 2015). Molecular self-assembly merupakan suatu proses dimana molekul-molekul kimia dapat terorganisir secara rapi tanpa arahan dari luar sistem itu sendiri (Steed dan Atwood, 2009). Molecular self-assembly terdiri dari intramolecular dan intermolecular molecular self-assembly.
