Banyak ahli mendefinisikan kepemimpinan sebagai kemampuan untuk memengaruhi, mengarahkan, dan menginspirasi orang lain untuk mencapai tujuan bersama. Menurut Yukl (2013), kepemimpinan adalah proses memengaruhi bawahan untuk memahami dan menyetujui apa yang perlu dilakukan dan bagaimana melakukannya secara efektif. Artinya, kepemimpinan tidak hanya berfokus pada posisi formal, tetapi pada proses interaksi yang menghasilkan pengaruh. Esensi kepemimpinan terletak pada aspek pengaruh (influence), bukan pada kekuasaan formal. Seorang pemimpin efektif tidak semata-mata memberi perintah, melainkan menumbuhkan kepercayaan, komitmen, dan motivasi intrinsik pada anggota timnya. Dalam konteks manajemen modern, kepemimpinan dipandang sebagai seni menggerakkan manusia melalui komunikasi, visi, dan teladan.
