Secara umum, karbon aktif memiliki struktur menyerupai grafit amorf yang tidak beraturan dan distribusi ukuran pori yang luas (makropori hingga mikropori), memungkinkan berlangsungnya interaksi kimia dan fisika secara efektif pada permukaan internalnya.
