Karakteristik utama kelompok senyawa ini meliputi ketahanan terhadap degradasi fotolitik, biologis, dan kimiawi, toksisitas yang tinggi, serta terutama persistensi yang sangat kuat di lingkungan. POPs memiliki waktu paruh yang sangat panjang, dapat berlangsung selama bertahun- tahun hingga puluhan tahun sebelum terdegradasi menjadi bentuk yang kurang toksik. Senyawa-senyawa ini bersifat lipofilik sehingga mudah terakumulasi dalam jaringan lemak organisme hidup dan, akibatnya, mengalami bioakumulasi di sepanjang rantai makanan dalam ekosistem. Oleh karena itu, konsentrasi POPs tertinggi ditemukan pada organisme yang berada di tingkat trofik paling atas.
