Secara kognitif, otak manusia memang merasa lebih nyaman untuk melakukan abstraksi diametral terhadap fenomena-fenomena yang ditangkap oleh pancaindra, lalu mengasosiasikan segala sesuatu tersebut ke dalam kategori biner. Ada siang \u2013 malam; panas \u2013 dingin; hulu \u2013 hilir; gunung \u2013 laut; desa \u2013 kota; normal \u2013 tidak normal; dan masih banyak lagi. Kita bahkan merasa kebingungan saat menemukan kasus-kasus yang tidak mengikuti kaidah dikotomis semacam itu, lalu tak segan menyebutnya sebagai suatu anomali. Termasuk ketika berbicara tentang suatu disiplin ilmu, sekali lagi, untuk memudahkan dan membuat nyaman otak manusia, kita membaginya ke dalam dua pilar besar: ilmu alam dan ilmu sosial. Sebagai suatu ide di dalam kepala, pandangan tersebut sah-sah saja. Namun, ketika gagasan tersebut diformalisasi dan dilembagakan melalui serangkaian peraturan, klasifikasi, dan standardisasi, watak negatif dari upaya-upaya semacam itu adalah munculnya subjek- subjek yang tidak sepenuhnya terakomodasi (kalau kita tidak mau menyebutnya \u201ctermarjinalkan\u201d). Mereka yang \u201clumayan mirip\u201d namun sekaligus \u201cterlalu berbeda\u201d untuk disandingkan dalam satu kelompok. Alhasil, subjek tersebut tidak dapat berperan dan dipahami secara holistik karena superstruktur yang meregulasi dan paradigma yang menyertainya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
