Dalam konteks ini, superkapasitor (kapasitor elektrokimia) menempati posisi strategis karena menjembatani celah kinerja antara kapasitor konvensional dan baterai isi ulang. Superkapasitor menawarkan keunggulan unik berupa daya spesifik yang sangat tinggi, waktu pengisian cepat, umur siklus yang panjang (ratusan ribu kali), dan kehandalan yang baik. Kebutuhan superkapasitor terus meningkat, terutama dalam bidang otomotif. Karbon aktif memainkan peran fundamental sebagai material elektroda dalam berbagai aplikasi penyimpanan energi, terutama pada superkapasitor tipe elektrik double-layer capacitor (EDLC). Prinsip kerja EDLC bergantung pada penumpukan muatan elektrostatik (bukan reaksi redoks faradaik) pada antarmuka antara elektroda dan elektrolit, membentuk lapisan ganda listrik. Efektivitas pro s ini sangat bergantung pada karakteristik permukaan elektroda. Di sinilah karbon aktif bersinar, karena ia memiliki luas permukaan yang sangat besar (dapat mencapai &gt;3000 m\u00b2\/g) yang disediakan oleh jaringan pori yang ekstensif (mikro, meso, dan makropori).
