Ciri-cirinya meliputi tubuh yang terbagi menjadi tiga bagian utama: kepala (caput), dada (toraks), dan perut (abdomen). Mereka memiliki tiga pasang kaki (Yunani: Hexa = enam; poda = kaki), satu pasang antena, dan dua pasang sayap saat dewasa. Rangka luar mereka terdiri dari kitin, yang berfungsi sebagai pelindung tubuh sekaligus tempat otot terpaut, sehingga memungkinkan gerakan yang lebih efisien. Serangga memiliki variasi bentuk mulut yang berbeda, seperti untuk mengunyah, menusuk, dan menjilat, yang mencerminkan penyesuaian ekologis terhadap beraneka ragam sumber makanan. Selain itu, sebagian besar serangga melalui proses metamorfosis, baik yang sempurna maupun yang tidak, yang merupakan strategi penting untuk mengurangi persaingan antara larva dan fase dewasa dalam spesies yang sama. Keanekaragaman serangga adalah salah satu elemen terpenting dalam klasifikasi hewan, karena kelompok kelas Insecta mencakup jumlah spesies, famili, dan ordo yang sangat signifikan bila dibandingkan dengan kelompok organisme lainnya. Saat ini, diperkirakan bahwa lebih dari satu juta spesies serangga telah diidentifikasi secara ilmiah, dengan estimasi total spesies yang ada di planet ini antara 5 hingga 10 juta spesies, menunjukkan bahwa banyak serangga masih belum terdeteksi. Dalam taksonomi modern, serangga biasanya dikelompokkan ke dalam sekitar 26 hingga 30 ordo yang diakui, dengan ratusan famili aktif yang terus diperbarui seiring dengan kemajuan filogeni molekuler dan revisi sistematika.
