Viabilitas benih mengukur kemampuan benih untuk berkecambah di bawah kondisi lingkungan yang standar. Viabilitas dinilai dalam bentuk persentase benih yang berkecambah dalam kondisi uji tertentu, dan hasilnya dimanfaatkan untuk menentukan benih itu hidup dan memenuhi\u00a0 standar minimum kelayakan tanam. Uji viabilitas merupakan parameter dasar dalam sertifikasi mutu benih dan memberikan informasi benih layak ditanam berdasarkan kemampuan dasarnya untuk tumbuh. Kemampuan benih untuk berkecambah cepat, seragam, dan mampu bertoleransi pada kondisi lingkungan yang kurang menguntungkan adalah ciri benih dengan vigor yang tinggi.
