Hampir seluruh keputusan ekonomi jangka panjang, baik yang dilakukan oleh individu, perusahaan, maupun pemerintah, pada dasarnya merupakan keputusan investasi. Oleh karena itu, pemahaman yang komprehensif mengenai pengertian investasi menjadi fondasi utama sebelum membahas teori, instrumen, dan praktik manajemen investasi serta portofolio. Secara umum, investasi dapat didefinisikan sebagai pengorbanan sumber daya ekonomi pada saat ini dengan harapan memperoleh manfaat ekonomi di masa yang akan datang. Pengorbanan tersebut umumnya berbentuk dana, tetapi dapat pula berupa aset non kas, waktu, tenaga, maupun kesempatan (opportunity cost) yang dilepaskan demi memperoleh manfaat yang lebih besar di masa depan.
