It did not create atoms so that one day they could become antibiotics. It did not arrange electrons with the purpose of treating cancer. It did not design proteins so that scientists could search for molecules capable of changing their behavior. The universe had no hospital in mind.\u00a0 Long before the first cell appeared, matter was already following rules. Particles interacted. Atoms formed. Bonds emerged and broke. Energy moved from one form to another. Over immense periods of time, simple matter became organized into increasingly complex structures. Stars formed the elements that would later become oceans, rocks, cells, blood, bones, and medicines. Carbon became part of both human bodies and therapeutic molecules. Oxygen supported life but could also damage it. The same forces that shaped distant galaxies eventually governed the interaction between a drug and a protein inside a cell. None of this required intention. Nature does not need to understand its own laws in order to obey them.\u00a0 An electron does not know where it is going. A protein does not understand why it folds. A molecule does not recognize disease. Yet their behavior is not completely arbitrary. It is constrained by energy, structure, charge, motion, probability, and the surrounding environment. Drug discovery begins inside this invisible order. A researcher may sit in front of a computer and examine a three-dimensional model of a protein. On the screen, thousands of molecules are placed into a small region called a binding site. Each molecule is rotated, moved, and evaluated. Some appear to fit. Others do not. A few form favorable interactions and are selected for further study. From the outside, this may look like a highly modern activity. The computer is modern. The software is modern.
